Why the Best Corporate Events Happen Beyond the Boardroom

HOSTING THE CLA AGM

Thinking Outside The Box

When planning a corporate event, it can be easy to focus on the agenda, with things like venue sourcing simply becoming just a practical decision. You likely need ease of access, proximity to the office, a projector and somewhere to gather for refreshments. We agree with those necessities, however, urge companies to think outside the box a little.

The most successful corporate events aren’t defined by the presentations or the minutes. They’re remembered for the conversations that happened afterwards, the ideas sparked by a change of scenery and the moments that brought people together in unexpected ways.

That’s exactly what made hosting the Country Land and Business Association (CLA) East AGM  such a rewarding experience. As an organisation dedicated to supporting landowners and rural businesses, the CLA brought together members from across Hertfordshire and the surrounding counties for a day of discussion, collaboration and shared purpose. It was an opportunity to create an event that reflected both the organisation and the landscape it exists to support.

A Corporate Event Designed Around Experience

The day began beneath our joined tipis, where delegates gathered for the formal AGM before hearing from Thomas Abel-Smith, who shared the vision for Woodhall Estate and the work taking place across the landscape. The backdrop to this section of the day wasn’t a stage wall, or a boardroom window, but a view of the rolling parklands.

Once the formalities of the meeting concluded, the experience shifted beyond the agenda.

Rather than moving directly to lunch, delegates divided into smaller groups to discover the Estate for themselves. Guided e-bike tours took guests through the parkland, while others explored the Walled Gardens, hearing about their restoration and future from the team leading the project. Along the route, conversations paused at Tumbling Bay to learn about our river restoration work with Affinity Water before continuing to The Stables, where we shared more about the Estate’s long-term vision.

By the time everyone returned for a seasonal feasting lunch prepared by Patten & Baker, the formal business of the morning had naturally evolved into something more relaxed. Conversations flowed easily, new connections had been made, and the Estate had become part of the day’s story.

Why the Setting Matters

The environment shapes every event.

It’s why more organisations are looking beyond traditional conference centres when planning leadership retreats, executive meetings and company away days.

Stepping outside changes the rhythm of the day, and simply walking side by side encourages different conversations than sitting across a boardroom table. Shared experiences create stronger relationships than shared presentations.

For the CLA, whose members spend their working lives caring for the countryside, it felt entirely fitting that the discussions continued within the landscape itself.

Corporate Events at Woodhall Park

Every organisation is different, which is why no two events we host are ever the same.

Some arrive for strategic planning sessions or leadership retreats, while others are bringing together clients, celebrating milestones or hosting industry events. Many are simply looking for somewhere that feels distinctly different from another hotel meeting room.

Our role is to create an experience that reflects the people in the room. That might mean beginning the day with focused discussion before exploring the Estate, or it could include guided experiences, seasonal dining, wellness activities or time simply to enjoy the surroundings together. Whatever the format, the landscape becomes part of the event.
