Behind the historic brick walls of Woodhall Park, The Walled Gardens are a little world of their own.

Restored with care in 2020, the gardens bring together old walls, mature planting, wildflower meadows, an orchard, lawns and the Georgian Garden House. It is a setting that feels timeless and relaxed; somewhere to gather, celebrate, stay awhile and make yourself at home.

For weddings, the gardens become yours. Not just for the ceremony, but for the celebrations that unfold around it.

From lawn ceremonies and champagne beneath the trees to long dinners, late-night dancing and slow breakfasts the next morning, there is no need to rush through it.

The gardens

There are four distinct spaces within The Walled Gardens, each with its own character and its own part to play.

The Upper Garden is the main setting for weddings and celebrations. Formal lawns, planted borders and a central pathway give it an elegant structure, while the surrounding walls make the space feel intimate. It can welcome up to 250 guests, with room for a marquee, alfresco dining, dancing and everything in between.

The Lower Garden is a little wilder. A young orchard of native apple varieties sits alongside a wildflower meadow, alive with bees, butterflies and seasonal colour. A beautiful place for a quiet wander, photographs or a moment away from the party.

The Garden House Lawn wraps around the Georgian house, with a neat presentation, historic walls and hydrangeas. It makes an intimate setting for a ceremony, a place to gather before dinner, or simply somewhere to sit with a drink as the afternoon slips into evening.

And then there is Beehives Cottage Garden. Informal, secluded and wonderfully natural, with winding paths, meadow grasses and its own wood-fired hot tub – made for guests staying on after the celebrations have finished.

From alfresco dinners amongst the hydrangeas to a post-wedding barbecue, lawn games and long, lazy afternoons, the gardens give the weekend plenty of places to unfold.

ACCOMMODATION AT WOODHALL PARK

Stay a little longer.

A wedding here doesn’t have to begin when the ceremony does.

Arrive the day before with your closest people. Settle into each of your accommodations and open a bottle in the garden. Share stories over a rehearsal dinner; let everyone get to know the place before the celebrations begin.

On the morning itself, there is nowhere else to be. Wake slowly, with coffee and excitement in hand. Garden House provides a idyllic space for wedding morning preparations, while outside, the garden begins to come to life around you.

Then the day unfolds naturally. The ceremony, drinks on the lawn, dinner in the Upper Garden, music as the light fades and dancing late into the evening.

And the morning after? Breakfast outside, perhaps a few rounds of croquet or garden games. Debrief walks, a dip in the hot tub and a long lunch or post-wedding barbecue before everyone says those final goodbyes.

A little piece of history

The Walled Gardens have been part of Woodhall Park for generations.

Designed and constructed in 1782–83 by William Malcolm & Son, Royal Nurserymen and landscape designers to the King, the gardens were created as both formal and kitchen gardens.

In their heyday, they were particularly renowned for their fruit, with an extraordinary range grown behind the walls; from pineapples, peaches, melons and grapes to apricots, cherries, pears, plums, damsons, quince and countless varieties of apple.

Beyond the walls, the ‘slips’ were used to grow vegetables, including mushrooms, in quantities to supply the household.

In 2020, the gardens were sympathetically restored under the guidance of Lady Egremont, with the aim of bringing them back to life while respecting their history.

The old brick walls were carefully restored by a local master brick mason. New planting brought together the formality of the original garden with softer, more naturalistic spaces.

The result is somewhere that feels established without feeling overly manicured.

Historic, but very much alive.

Beyond the gardens

The Walled Gardens sit within the wider landscape of Woodhall Park, with rolling parkland, woodland and open countryside stretching beyond the walls, giving the celebrations room to breathe.

Take photographs among the gardens before disappearing into the Park, walk together between the ceremony and dinner and let the children run through the meadow. Find a quiet bench with a glass of something cold or head out on bikes the following morning.

Events are exclusive and we never host weddings and overnight stays in The Walled Gardens simultaneously. So when you are here to celebrate, the gardens are yours to enjoy without interruption.

And when guests are staying, the gardens return to being a quiet corner of the Park. Peaceful, private and restorative.
